Feel Better This Fall: Your Somatic Autumn Reset Guide

This week, I pulled out my cinnamon-vanilla wax melts, wore a sweater on my morning walk, and we started up our homeschool routine.

That can only mean one thing… it’s time for an autumn reset – somatic style.

You might disagree with me on this, but the summers are just too hot to enjoy! I adore seasonal change to fall and all the fall self-care routines I get to start.

But let’s be honest: seasonal transitions are hard.

Letting go of summer’s easy energy feels like losing a part of yourself. The lazy days and that carefree rhythm are so soothing to your body.

Settling into cooler weather means your nervous system is constantly recalibrating. Shorter days, temperature drops, everything feels different.

And looming ahead? The busy holiday season with its demands, expectations, and emotional complexity.

The real struggle: You love fall’s beauty, but your body feels scattered, tired, or “off” in ways you can’t quite explain.

What if instead of pushing through these signals, we partnered with your body’s wisdom during this autumn reset?

Grab a sample of the best-selling Somatic Journal to make this process super simple.

Why Your Body Needs a Somatic Autumn Reset

If you’ve been feeling “off” lately but can’t explain why, this isn’t in your head.

Your nervous system responds to everything: shorter days, temperature drops, schedule changes, even the collective energy shift that happens every fall.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: seasonal transitions are nervous system events.

Your body is constantly recalibrating to new light patterns, temperature changes, and social rhythms.

Common signs your system is adjusting:

  • Sleep feeling different (even if you can’t pinpoint how)
  • Digestive changes or unusual cravings
  • Mood shifts that seem to come from nowhere
  • Feeling more sensitive to stress

None of this means something is wrong with you.

Most fall self-care focuses on external things—pumpkin spice everything, cozy aesthetics, gratitude lists.

This somatic approach isn’t about adding more to your plate.

Somatic practices work from the inside out. Instead of thinking your way through seasonal transitions, you partner with your body’s natural intelligence.

You’re not broken. You’re just ready to listen.

The Somatic Autumn Reset Framework

These five practices changed everything for me, and they can for you too.

1. Grounding With the Season (Root Down)

Your nervous system craves connection to earth, especially as everything around you changes.

Try this: Walk barefoot on fallen leaves for just 2 minutes. Feel the texture, temperature, and connection.

At home: Child’s pose for 30 seconds. Forward folds. Weighted blankets during evening wind-down.

Why it works: These practices activate your vagus nerve, shifting you from “wired” to “grounded” in minutes.

2. Breath for Fall Energy (Slow the Exhale)

When your system feels scattered, your exhale is your reset button.

The practice: 4-7-8 breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8) or simply make your exhale twice as long as your inhale.

Fall imagery: Imagine exhaling what no longer serves you, like leaves falling from trees.

Why it works: Longer exhales activate your parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s rest and digest mode.

Even 2 minutes creates a noticeable shift.

3. Autumn Reset Nervous System Nourishment

Your gut and nervous system are intimately connected. What you eat directly impacts how you feel.

Focus on: Warm soups, roasted root vegetables, warming spices like cinnamon and ginger.

The connection: Your gut produces 90% of your body’s serotonin. Nourishing foods = steadier mood and energy.

Simple swap: Replace that afternoon coffee with golden milk or herbal tea. Notice how your evening energy changes.

4. Rhythmic Rituals (Match the Season’s Tempo)

Your nervous system loves predictability. Consistent rhythms signal safety.

Morning ritual: 5 minutes of gentle stretching or journaling with your coffee.

Evening ritual: Candlelight, herbal tea, and three deep breaths before bed.

Why it matters: Routine tells your nervous system “we’re safe, we can relax.”

Permission: These don’t need to be elaborate. Consistency matters more than complexity.

5. Release + Reset (Somatic Letting-Go Practice)

Fall is nature’s lesson in letting go. Your body can learn from this wisdom.

The practice:

  1. Gentle shaking for 30 seconds (start with hands, let it move through your whole body)
  2. Write down what you’re ready to release on paper
  3. Forward fold or child’s pose for 1 minute
  4. Rip up the paper (optional but satisfying)

Why it works: Physical release helps process emotional stress that gets stored in your body during seasonal changes.

This somatic letting-go practice aligns perfectly with autumn’s natural rhythm of shedding and renewal.

Signs Your Somatic Autumn Reset is Working

You’ll know these fall self-care practices are working when:

Sleep becomes easier. You fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested, even if you’re not sleeping longer.

Energy feels steadier. Less afternoon crashes, more consistent mood throughout the day.

You feel more “in your body.” Physical sensations become information instead of problems to solve.

Seasonal changes feel gentler. Instead of fighting the autumn reset, you start flowing with it.

You crave what nourishes you. Your body naturally wants warming foods, earlier bedtimes, and slower rhythms.

Stress doesn’t linger as long. You bounce back faster from difficult moments.

Progress isn’t linear. Some days will feel easier than others, and that’s completely normal.

Trust your body’s timeline. Even small shifts are meaningful.
